Success through failure

Wednesday, October 29th, 2008

That’s what this whole journey is about, success through failure. I’m still plugging away at various projects and campaigns with minimal success so far. Here’s a quote by Brian Tracy I found quite helpful today:

Every single peak performing human being, every single high achieving man or woman, has been a person who has thrown off the natural tendency to play it safe and stay within the comfort zone, and has continually tried to exceed their previous levels of accomplishment, has continually moved forward into the risk zone, to try something more and bigger and better and more important. Every single accomplishment in the history of man, has come from men and women who have had the courage to take the risks, to step out even though they had no guarantee or assurance of success…

In studying the lives and stories of the most outstanding men and women of all of history, we find that every single one of them has been a great failure. People do not understand the importance of failure in achievement. The fact is that it is impossible to succeed without failing, that failure is an indispensable prerequisite for success, and that all great success is proceeded by great failure. Every single person who has tried to accomplish something outside the ordinary has suffered setback and obstacle and defeat and adversity and disappointment and heartache over and over again as they have moved toward their goal. There is no record of anybody ever having achieved any kind of success without having failed over and over again. The only difference is that the winners continually pick themselves up and carry on knowing that ultimate success is inevitable as long as they keep on going on.

On the verge of success (or failure, take your pick)

It’s 4:30am, I’m knackered, but I’m on the verge of my first PPC campaign using Adwords based on the PPC-Coach.com methods. Actually, it’s not my first ever campaign. About 2 years ago I randomly setup a campaign to Amazon from Adwords and it actually made a decent profit, but it was an accident and wasn’t repeated.

Anyway, as I said, I’m on the verge of success, or maybe failure. I have my ad copy, I have my campaign almost setup, and I’m going to make the finishing touches tomorrow. I’ve been putting it off for so long for fear of failure, which is a joke because by all rights my first attempt should be a failure.

I’m not expecting a profit from this campaign, but I’d be happy if I got some conversions and most of all that my systems all work. I want my keywords tracked properly, I don’t want any technical screw ups basically. I’ve spent enough time making sure everything’s working so I should be ok, but you just never know.

Fingers crossed til tomorrow…

No one said this internet lark was easy

Ah, still struggling away. The biggest challenge this last week has been to find the time to work on my projects.

In preparation for my launching into PPC and pumping out as many campaigns as I can afford, I’ve had to pile on the overtime at work. That means I’m working about 50 hours in the day job, and then working throught the night with my online stuff. It’s infuriating, but I’d rather have the money available and ready for PPC when I need it rather than having to wait around.

I’ve just launched another Facebook campaign which is doomed to fail, but with every failure I get that little bit closer to where I want to be. I’ll keep that running til tomorrow and then report back on how much money I’ve not made.

I mentioned that I’d signed up to PPC Coach a few days ago. Well I’ve read a crap load of stuff on there and learnt quite a bit, and once I’ve got my head around some of the technical stuff then I’ll be making campaigns like there’s no tomorrow.

Tonight is all about working out how to use the tracking system to log clicks and keywords sent from the PPC engines, and then I’ll take a look at integrating all the code I’m using for the landing pages into Wordpress.

So, a real fun night ahead of me - I can’t wait to get stuck into some annoying code.

Frustration, can’t move forward with anything

Sunday, October 5th, 2008

Just hit a rut and can’t get out of it, at least for today. Stuck at work doing a mindless job, usually I’d say it was the best job in the world because I get to work from home but tonight I just can’t focus.

I want to work on my business projects but there’s nothing I can do right now to move things forward, and my energy levels are really low as well. All I am reminded of is that I’m not making any money - ha!

I wanted to work on a particular site but the domain hasn’t propogated properly. Tried to mess some affiliate stuff but I can’t get my head around the subID tracking and don’t want to risk starting a campaign that just throws money down the drain.

The lesson here is that it’s ok to call it a day until the next day, no more work today.

Affiliate Summit Videos

Thursday, October 2nd, 2008

Just a quick heads up - the latest Affiliate Summit conference videos are available to view/download on their site at http://www.affiliatesummit.com/videoaccess.php

There’s some awesome stuff on there and it’s a great opporutunity for people who couldn’t get to the event due to finances (or living on the other side of pond) like me.

EDIT: Shawn Collins from Affiliate Summit sent me a polite message on twitter saying that he’d appreciate it if people didn’t dowload the files and just viewed them on the site, so as I’m such a nice guy I’ve stopped downloading them.

Income Report for September 2008

Wednesday, October 1st, 2008

It’s been an abysmal month, I’m almost tempted to not put down what I earned. But I want people to be able to look back and see this report and compare to one done in a year’s time, just to see how far I’ve come and how much I’ve grown.

So here it is…

  • Minisite No. 1:  $0.07
  • Minisite No. 2:  $1.94
  • Misc Adsense:  $0.50

Total for the month of: $2.51

Minisite No. 1 was my first attempt at article marketing, and while the site is getting the traffic it it’s getting a very poor CPC.

Minisite No. 2 was an attempt at taking advantage at what looked like a spike in traffic for a particular keyword that had no competition, but it wasn’t to be.

I have no idea what Misc Adsense is, it looks like some income that isn’t being grouped into of my URL channels, which means I’m getting impressions and the odd click from a site that I don’t remember making - very strange.

Just looking at those stats, I could cry - but the only way is up.
